Indianapolis air show
August 15, 2008
Whew. Pardon me but I have been in Fair daze. Have you been able to make it? Today marked our fourth day at the fair and we still didn't get everything done. But as the fair winds down and school gets ready to start back up it's time for the Indianapolis Air Show at Mt. Comfort airport, about 20 minutes East of the 465 on I-70 in Greenfield, Indiana. The air show will go from Friday-Sunday August 22-24.
My husband is excited about the air show. I can only assume my daughter will love it just as much given her eyes always turn skyward when she hears an airplane or a helicopter. The air show will feature a lot more than just airplanes, there will be a hot air balloon-a-thon Friday and Saturday morning along with a balloon glow at 9 pm on Friday and an opportunity for kids to meet the balloon pilots and get up close from 8-11am on Saturday. If you've never seen a balloon glow, and your kids can handle staying up it's well worth the effort. Back home we always went to the Autumn Aloft, a balloon festival that featured balloon glows.
You are welcome to bring your own chairs, blankets, strollers and coolers under 14". For the benefit of little ears, and your own, be sure to bring earplugs and be sure you child knows he or she needs to wear them. Planes are loud. Tickets are $17, good for one day and children under 6 are free.
Since the air show is still a week away, there's plenty of time to head to the library and pick up a book about airplanes and have your child pick his or her favorite and see if you can pick it out on the day of the show. Have them count how many similar planes they can see, how many are in a formation and see if they can name the different shapes the planes make such as V formations and loops.
If this air show is anything like the ones I went to in my childhood (and it's supposed to be ten times better according to what I've heard) both boys and girls (especially husbands) will love a day at the air show. And don't forget the fantastic weather we've been having.
