Anderson orchard
September 04, 2008
Today my daughter and I found something even better than a farmers market. A fried had recommended Anderson Orchard for the raspberries about a week ago. I called today and found out that pickings were pretty good so we headed down south to pick us some raspberries.
Not only did we find raspberries, we were able to pick our own apples and purchase Indiana watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, sweet corn, apple butter and apple slush all for less than $30. The orchards are well maintained and easy to get around. The staff is knowledgeable, the trees are well labeled and the actual produce?
I have never had better cantaloupe ever. I've already eaten a whole one myself. Seriously.
My daughter loved picking the raspberries with her own little bucket and using the apple pickers to get the apples high up on the branches. We met friends there who were having a picnic by a little pond in the shade. It was idyllic really. We filled ourselves with fresh raspberries while our kids threw rocks in the pond (which apparently you can fish in.)
The orchard is open through fall with the produce changing seasonally and different kinds of apples coming into season throughout the coming months along with various other fresh produce. There is a small concession stand where you can purchase fried apple pies, caramel apples, apple slush and fresh apple cider. Pumpkins will also be available along with apples come October if you and your family is into picking out your own pumpkin.
Anderson Orchard is a great way to teach your kids about where their food comes from and what it takes to get it to the table. It is also a great way to support the local economy here in Indiana. Plus, a bucketful of raspberries for less than $4 and apples picked fresh from the tree? I promise you they taste SO much better.
Anderson Orchard is located South West of Indy in Moorseville. Hours vary depending on the season and all of this information and more can be found on their website.
