There's more to fall than halloween
October 28, 2008
As a kid two things came to mind when I heard the word Halloween. Costumes and candy. Even now as a parent when the subject of Halloween comes up the two front runners are still costumes and candy. There's so much more to Halloween and the entire fall season surrounding it than costumes and candy and while it may seem like a stretch to come up with activities that don't involve taffeta, plastic Read more...
Pancakes, pancakes!
September 08, 2008
Most kids don't have preschool everyday. And even for kids who spend their days at school or at daycare, most of us still have at least one magical weekend morning to gather together and have a real breakfast, around the table and everything. OH! How I looked forward to Saturday morning at my dad's house. It always meant waking up to eggs and bacon, french toast, waffles or pancakes served by my Read more...
Anderson orchard
September 04, 2008
Today my daughter and I found something even better than a farmers market. A fried had recommended Anderson Orchard for the raspberries about a week ago. I called today and found out that pickings were pretty good so we headed down south to pick us some raspberries. Not only did we find raspberries, we were able to pick our own apples and purchase Indiana watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, sweet Read more...
Preschool snacks
September 01, 2008
Let's face it, not everyone is as picky as you may be when it comes to snacks served at preschool. I know I'm picky and I have no shame it admitting it. All the garbage floating around in supposed "juice drinks" and "juice cocktails." Not to mention the newer lower calorie juice drinks that contain artificial sweeteners. Now I'm not saying my child never has any of this, but if I can avoid it, Read more...
State fair part 2
August 13, 2008
Now that I have been to the state fair twice in the last three days and I am full of ribeye (holy cow worth staying in Indiana for) and elephant ear, I am back with some of the highlights my daughter and I found this year at the fair. The FAA building is full (FULL!) of hands on activities for kids. A play kitchen, a school bus, a fishing pond, a miniature golf course, an "underground" tunnel Read more...
Prime time for farmers' markets
July 30, 2008
If you have picky eaters, a farmers' market could be just what you need to expose your entire family to new fruits, vegetables, herbs, breads and cheeses. It's also an excellent way to start teaching your children about staying local with what they eat and to appreciate fruits and vegetables in their season. I have a friend who always said "just because you can get strawberries in the winter Read more...
Dinner table destinations
July 22, 2008
Going out to eat with children can prove to be a challenge at times. Thankfully our little family has perfected the art of eating out (at least to the extent that we can control.) We come prepared with quiet toys that hold some sort of novelty with our daughter, toys she only sees when we go out to eat or on long boring road trips. We also have a deal with our daughter that she Read more...
Have your dinner in Greece.
July 18, 2008
Is your family ready for a vacation to Greece? Well hop in the car and go hungry to the Greek Islands restaurant, downtown at 906 S. Meridain Ave. A small family owned restaurant, the Greek Islands is no secret from downtown business people who go for a great lunch in a cozy atmosphere. Locals love it because it has been owned by the Stergiopoulos mily for years and has never compromised Read more...
Mealtime mats equal mealtime learning
July 17, 2008
I remember having Sesame Street mats at the dinner table in childhood. I remember there was one that was actually the shape of big bird, I would trace his outline over and over while waiting for, or refusing, dinner. My dad happened to catch a morning show where a five year old boy came on and recited all fifty U.S. Presidents and then followed with saying he learned them all from a laminated Read more...

July 03, 2008

If you have then you know how friendly of a store Trader Joe's is and how easy it is to find fun, quick and healthy (not to mention affordable) foods your whole family will love. A Mommy (or Daddy) Date in Downtown.
June 26, 2008
I had a lovely date with my daughter quite by accident yesterday afternoon and I'd like to share it with you. We started out by going to the downtown library. Have you been to the newly remodeled building? It's quite wonderous and lovely. We found our own little egg shaped chair along a sunny windowed wall and spent an hour or so reading books that she went and picked off the shelf herself. We Read more...
Strawberry Season at Waterman's Farm Market.
June 04, 2008
Did someone say strawberry? No? Well I will. STRAWBERRY. Strawberry pie, strawberry jam, strawberry smoothies and strawberries with cream. With the economy making food more and more expensive it's time to teach our kids about local produce, and helping them to embrace what fresh tastes like, where their food comes from and appreciate the time of year when local produce comes into season. And boy Read more...
The Budding Art Critic: How to make the IMA a place your child loves.
June 02, 2008
Art is in every corner of every city and every building in America. From the sterile reproductions in a hotel room to the curve of a sports car. It's training an eye to see such things that is the hard part. Heading straight for the IMA with a small one for their first exposure to art can prove a little tricky. Start out in small galleries featuring art you know your child will relate to . Read more...
99 things to do with your child in Indianapolis before they grow up.

Go to the Indy 500. See the city from the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (stair climbing optional). Lie in the shade with a heap of ribs to share at Rib Fest. Cheer the runners from the sidelines at the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon. Brush up on your French for the French Market Festival. Take a bike ride down the Monon Trail. Sit in the splash zone at the dolphin show at the Read more...
How to be a prince(ess) for a day.
May 23, 2008
I'm guessing if you have kids you have costumes. Dress up clothes. Accessories. And if you don't have them specifically in child sizes your child has no problem borrowing your heels, bling and daddy's ties. But what do you do when your child is all dressed up with no where to go? You find somewhere to go of course. Thankfully with small imaginations it doesn't take much for them to play along Read more...
Top 5 things to do outside when the rain clears and the sun shines.
May 13, 2008
After a long rainstorm the world can look, feel and smell completely new and different. Often I feel like the Munchkins in Oz poking my head out into the sunshine after a week of gloomy weather. Colors are more saturated, rivers and streams are fuller and the sky is bluer. Learning to appreciate a storm breaking and enjoying a perfect day is a must for any family. 5. Nothing says summer and Read more...
