Getting local with literature.

November 25, 2008

Sometimes it's fun to get local with books. Did you know that author/illustrator Bill Peet grew up in Indianapolis and went to the Herron school of Art and Design? He even did the entire storyboards for Disney's feature films "The Sword in the Stone" and "One Hundred and One Dalmations." Who's to say a small town kid from Indianapolis can't make it big time?
Two other books with local flair (and the same title) are H is for Hoosier.
Both books include Indiana facts, history and pictures A-Z with H of course being for Hoosier.
Even though I'm still not sure what a Hoosier is.
Anyone?
There's a good project in and of itself. Have your child draw a Hoosier, then have them send it to me, I'm curious what they think it is.
The first "H is for Hoosier" book is by Dori Hillestad Butler and Eileen Potts Dawson.
The second book, titled "H is for Hoosier: An Indiana Alphabet" is by
Cynthia Furlong Reynolds.
Another great resource is the library. (Whoo, there's an original idea, but let me explain.) I've found that in the travel section of the local libraries are dozens of books about Indiana, what to do with kids, what to do with the family, day trips, quirky and unique places in Indiana. When I'm at a loss for what to do, thinking there's nothing left in this state I'll peruse the local/travel aisle at the library. You'd be surprised at just how many museums and oddities hidden all over this state, especially in Indianapolis.
